Caring for your Jewellery

  • Sterling Silver reacts with chemicals in the air and tarnishes over a period of time
  • To help avoid tarnish, store jewellery in airtight containers or grip-seal bags with anti-tarnish strip or sachet of desiccated silica gel and activated charcoal
  • Store individual pieces separately to avoid scratching
  • Avoid exposing your Sterling Silver to direct sunlight, household chemicals or when swimming in chlorinated water, hair products, perfumes, cosmetics, perspiration, rubber and latex, as these chemicals can damage Sterling Silver
  • To help reduce tarnishing remember to apply your hairspray and perfume BEFORE putting on jewellery

Cleaning you Sterling Silver Jewellery

  • Although wearing your Silver jewellery often is the best way to prevent tarnish from building up, regular cleanings of all your Silver jewellery will prevent tarnish and keep your silver bright and sparkling
  • If there is no tarnish on your Silver, use a phosphate-free detergent to clean jewellery after use. Silver that is used, then gently washed and dried immediately will require little tarnish removal
  • For daily cleaning use a non-abrasive jewellery polishing cloth that is impregnated with special jewellery cleaner
  • Tarnish is most easily removed when it first becomes visible
  • Tarnish is more difficult to remove as it turns from a yellowish tint to brown and eventually black, requiring professional cleaning
  • Stirling Silver dips are fast and easy. However, be careful! First, many dips will take the colour and polish off many gemstones. Second, when using a dip, if you leave the jewellery in too long, or don't rinse it well with fresh cold water. white residues will be left on the jewellery. The residue is difficult to rub or pick off. Always read manufacturer's instructions.
  • These are some of the stones used by our suppliers that are not suitable for dipping:
    • Pearls
    • Sodalite
    • Malachite
    • Lapis Lazuli
    • White Opals
    • Turquoise
  • A lot of the gemstone shine comes from an oily polish. This is dissolved by the dips
